Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o signs two year contract at Goodison Park
Everton Sign Samuel Eto’o
Everton have sealed the deal to take African football legend Samuel Eto’o to Goodison Park. The free agent, who was released by Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer, had agreed terms on a two year contract prior to passing a medical at the Toffees Finch Farm training complex.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez has made no secret of his intention to add extra firepower to the Blues squad and the Catalan will be hoping the former Real Madrid, Barca, Inter and Chelsea hit man will deliver the goals to fire Everton towards Champions League qualification.
Despite not cementing a regular starting role in Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea line-up, a return of nine league goals in 16 Premier League starts last season, including five appearances as a substitute, seems to have convinced Martinez to allow Eto’o the opportunity to support record signing Romelu Lukaku in the Everton attack.
Eto’o, who has appeared in four World Cups for Cameroon, and is his countries all-time top scorer could be in line to face Chelsea as Mourinho’s side travel to Goodison Park on Saturday evening.
“I am very happy to be here, I am looking forward greatly to putting on the Blue shirt of Everton,” said the 33 year old striker.
“I have been very impressed by the style of play Everton adopt. I could see straight away that at this club I will have the opportunity to play football. I had the chance to speak with the manager over the last few days and we agreed that this was what we would do.
“I was impressed with his enthusiasm but also by the knowledge of football that Roberto Martinez carries, his vision of football and how he reads football. I still think I can learn a great deal from him here.”
With the African legend seemingly coming to the end of his career, Martinez will be aware of the gamble he is taking on Eto’o.
The young Everton boss will no doubt be hoping the 33-year old can emulate another of his eyebrow raising signings.
Questions were asked when the Catalan brought in another thirty-something from Manchester City last season, however, the signing of Gareth Barry has proven to be a real success.
While some Evertonians will be uncertain the Cameroonian is the right man to take Everton forward, one thing is for sure, with the signing of Samuel Eto’o, Everton Football Club will certainly become a more interesting place for supporters and the media alike.
Martinez said: “I met him and we had a very good chat about football in general and I was impressed about the hunger he still has.
“For someone who has achieved nearly everything, he still has the desire he had at 15 when he went to Spain and showed what he could do. For many reasons he has got a point to prove.
“We are very excited and I think Everton is the perfect home for him. The fans will make him ready and feel sharp but we have got to be a bit patient with the fitness levels and make sure he is back to his best.”
