Everton passed a tough test in Northern Germany with flying colours as a goal in each half from Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas ensured victory over VfL Wolfsburg and top spot in Europa League Group H with a game still to play.
The near perfect away performance from Martinez’s men was once again witnessed by thousands of travelling Toffees and the Everton boss and his players were quick to pay tribute to supporters who have followed the club in Russia, France and Germany in recent weeks.
He said: “The celebrations were incredible.”
“There were Evertonians everywhere! We’ve had phenomenal support again.”
“We are probably the most privileged team in terms of the support that we receive from our fans,” Added Martinez.
“Looking around Wolfsburg on Thursday, they were phenomenal scenes, and that is our inspiration. We want to carry on making them proud.
“Everything that we do as a team is for our fans. We all work hard to make our fans proud and to make great memories together.”
Immediately after the Wolfsburg victory, Everton FC and a number of players were quick to show their gratitude towards the fans as a video was released across social media channels.
Hailing supporters who had travelled thousands of miles to watch their beloved Blues in Krasnodar, Everton defender John Stones said:
“To see the fans in the hotel before the game and see them turnout in their numbers here is massive. So thanks to them.”
Everton and England left back Leighton Baines also took the chance to express his gratitude to all those who follow the club on the continent:
“I want to take the opportunity to thank all the fans who make these journeys,” said Baines.
“We really appreciate your support and we appreciate it’s not cheap and it takes a lot of peoples time and money. So thanks very much and hopefully we can repay you with some good results.”
Baines added: “It is always amazing. I enjoy coming out to warm up and having a read of all the flags and seeing where they are from.”
“When you get that type of support coming out here (Lille) and you’re warming up, I do get goosebumps. It is pretty special.”
US ‘keeper Tim Howard also took time to praise the Blues Europa League away support who made the journey to Lille:
“I’d like to thank all those supporters who travelled to Lille,” said Howard.
“We know Evertonians will travel in large numbers but we were astounded when we got to the ground and saw how many were there.”
Everton boss Roberto Martinez also expressed his thanks to those who continue to follow the Blues in magnificent numbers.
He said: “The voice they give us is terrific and as a club we want to go on experiencing that. ”
“We want to just thank those fans, it’s what we do as a football club. We are going to enjoy the experience together.”
