Martinez hopes to be in pole position for Barcelona winger as La Masia graduate Isaac Cuenca eyes future away from Camp Nou
As reported by Everton Viral back in March Everton boss Roberto Martinez has a standing interest in the 23-year old Barcelona winger.
And Isaac Cuenca, who helped Barcelona progress in the Catalunya Cup with a 3-2 win over Girona on Wednesday, has revealed he could see his future away from the Catalan giants.
With Martinez having built up a healthy working relationship with Barcelona, the Toffees manager will be hopeful the successful loan deal involving Gerard Deulofeu will give Everton a head start over the likes of Ajax and AC Milan in the race for another Barcelona winger.
After a promising start to his Barca career in which Cuenca featured regularly under Pep Guardiola, the La Masia graduate has struggled to break into the Barcelona team after returning early from a loan-spell at Ajax due to injury.
Cuenca now finds himself way down the pecking order at the Catalan giants and with the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Pedro, Alexis Sanchez and Cristian Tello and perhaps Deulofeu to contend with, Cuenca has made it clear a move away from Barca may be best for all parties.
Speaking to BeIN Sports after Wednesday’s Catalunya Cup tie, his first competitive start since undergoing knee surgery, Isaac Cuenca said:
“It’s not easy to play for Barca, especially when coming back from injury.”
“It has hurt my chances having not been able to play since I resumed training. But I understand, because the team is fighting for a title and the fans don’t want to risk it,” said the 23-year old.
“I have a year left on my contract and I don’t know if I’ll continue.
“What I feel like doing is playing, enjoying my football and scoring goals.”
